It reduces sibilant sounds made through speaking words with 's' and 'ch', as is the case here. I encourage all readers to use such a device between the reader and the microphone. The microphone was not properly protected by a “pop screen”. I like to think our reader had this effect in mind. It certainly does help us quickly distinguish (as could a reader of the book itself) when the piece is changing from narration to dialog.
